THE IDEA

The Choreographic Platform Austria aims to advance contemporary dance created in Austria, to represent its international impact and newcomer potential and to provide a presentation area for it. The CPA is organised by “ARGE Tanz und Performance”, a network of leading Austrian contemporary dance and performance institutions. The main objectives of the CPA are linking the various hotspots of the Austrian dance and performance scene by highlighting its diversity, creating a platform of presentation for emerging artists and further establishing and strengthening the protagonists especially within the international context.

THE CPA* 2012

In 2012, the CPA is hosted by ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival #29. With the CPA*, the festival focuses prominently on dance artists, who live and work in Austria. By connecting local players with the international structures of Europe’s biggest dance festival, an additional benefit for artists, audience and producers will be created. This presentation of Austrian dance will especially be concentrated on the period of July 25 to August 1, 2012, within the festival. About 30 performance artists such as Chris Haring, Doris Uhlich, Anne Juren, Philipp Gehmacher or Superamas will deliver insights into their recent work by presenting world premieres, previews, installations or highlights of their creations.

Within the frame of CPA* 2012, a special working and performance space called “Österreich Pavillon” will be established, where pieces will be created, discussions be held and installations be shown. This format aims to encourage the exchange process of ideas between artists as well as between artists and audience, to reflect the diversity of the Austrian contemporary art scene but also initialise it anew. The “Österreich Pavillon” is available for the participating artists from July 16 – 29, and opens its gates for the audience on July 25 and 27, 2012.

ARGE Tanz und Performance

The working group “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Tanz und Performance“ (dance and performance syndicate) was founded in 2007 and is an initiative of the most important Austrian dance – and performance institutions. Together, they want to further develop the increasing impact of the platform CPA and use their particular professional competence to strengthen the national and international perception of the Austrian dance scene.

Ever heard of "PERFEKTION"? In the good old Viennese days, advanced ballroom dance students met once a week to dance – to improve their "perfection". The CPA* 2012 revisits one of the hotspots of this tradition and appropriates it for a special contemporary art project: For what’s going to happen at the "Österreich Pavillon" at former ballroom "Gschwandner" this year, is far away from any tradition. Contemporary dance and performance art will be created right on location. Artists will work there for two weeks and present their papers, performances, installations or projects to the audience on July 25 and 27!

This year, the European dance prize for emerging artists, Prix Jardin d’Europe, will be awarded within the frame of ImPulsTanz’s [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series. On this occasion, the series will be extended to 14 works by upcoming dancemakers. As ImPulsTanz is hosting the CPA* this year, CPA* artists Philipp Gehmacher, Chris Haring, Anne Juren, SUPERAMAS and Doris Uhlich curated five works of [8:tension].

Established Choreographers such as Chris Haring, Doris Uhlich, Anne Juren, Philipp Gehmacher or the artistic collective SUPERAMAS give an insight into their recent work by presenting world premieres, previews or artistic highlights. At the "Österreich Pavillon", about 20 artists will work and present new performance projects, papers or installations - this format intends to encourage and inspire the exchange between artists and with the audience. That way, the Pavillon also enables emerging newcomers from Austria to be present at ImPulsTanz 2012.
